Gathering organisers are confident the New Year dance party can survive cheaper competition in Golden Bay.

The second Vision New Year party at Pakawau was proclaimed a success by its organisers, and patrons claimed Vision was "in" while the Gathering at Upper Takaka was "out".

The Vision party attracted three times the initial 588 who attended last year, while this year the Gathering attracted 6000. Around 10,000 attended last year.

Gathering tickets cost $130 for the four-day event, rising to $160 in December, while Vision tickets cost up to $90.

Gathering marketing manager Danny O'Donnell said the two parties could co- exist.

The Vision Party did not come close to the Gathering in terms of organisation and safety and had less variety of music, Mr O'Donnell said. -- NZPA
