Overflowing camping grounds and traffic congestion will not be a problem before and after The Gathering dance party on Takaka Hill this year if a level of communication between authorities is maintained, said organiser Alison Green.

Ms Green said negotiations with the police and the Tasman District Council were "well under way."

Last year the number of visitors arriving for the New Year function far exceeded the accommodation available in the region, said Ms Green. "Some people were having to sleep under bridges," she said.

Senior Sergeant Jim Burrows of Motueka said the police would be doing everything they could to assist organisers. "We are trying to work on traffic issues to make it safe for evenryone, " he said. However, Mr Burrows reiterated that the responsibility for security at the venue lay with the organisers.

Ms Green said a resource consent application to hold the dance party would be lodged with the council this week.
