Drugs at Gathering

Nelson Mail letters to the editor, January 10 1998

Sir, I had three teenagers at the recent Gathering. They reported that "more than half" those attending were using drugs and that they were available "willy nilly". They also said they did not see any police.

I am concerned that thousands of young people had ready access to drugs and that no effective action was taken to stop it. Why didn't police prevent their widespread usage? The Gathering's security people were effective in preventing alcohol reaching the site. But alcohol's legal, whereas drugs are illegal.

It doesn't add up.
