The Gathering

Nelson Mail letters to the editor, 12 January 1998

Sir, I write in response to Bruce Dyer's letter about drugs at the Gathering (January 10). There were no police on duty at the Gathering. This decision was made on information gathered from the previous year's event. This year could be different.

Mr Dyer's children's account of the availability of drugs is at variance with other sources. Young people have access to drugs on a daily basis. It is all about freedom and being responsible. Drugs were used at the Gathering. Seven people needed assistance, but 7993 people either used drugs to no ill effect or did not use them. No incidents were reported. Several lost and found items have been handed to the police and six theft complaints have been received.

Snr Sgt ERIC STRETTON, Motueka Police, Motueka, 12 January.
